Anthropologie Inspired

I love this tank from Anthropologie....but it is $58.00 which is definitely not in my grad student budget, and its "hand wash only" which I just don't do....so I'll just make my own! HA take that Anthropologie!

Picture borrowed from here
So I had planned for the T-shirt to come out similar to this....but I didn't have large enough scraps of fabric so I ended up having a similar version - but with smaller ruffles

Here is the finished product:

Okay first tailor shirt as needed- I used an XL knit shirt, tailored it down, and used the extra scraps to make the ruffles.

If you don't know how to tailor a shirt, then visit here

Next take your strips of material, and sew 1/4 inch from the edge all the way down using a large stitch with out locking your stitches at the beginning and end so you can make it ruffle.

then pin it so the ruffle and the shirt are face to face (ruffle flipped up) so you can then top stitch it to get a nice edge.

Sew with a medium size straight stitch

Now flip the ruffle down and sew on top

Sew it

Now make another ruffle, and pin it under the first ruffle and sew it. I liked to fold under the ends to make a nice edge- but it is totally up to you

Sew a straight stitch...now you have two ruffles

Continue sewing ruffles under the ruffle before it, and eventually you will have something like this!

I added a few more ruffles so make it come to a peak like this:

And your done!! YAY happy dance!!

Hope you enjoyed this post!! Thanks for stopping by!

(sorry for the blurry and funky color pictures, my camera was having a bad day--and it was like midnight when I took these)

  1. Fun! Have been making similar ruffle shirts, and never knew how to flip each ruffle over to disguise the edge. Thanks!
